August is National Fishing Month, and there's no better way to spend the summer than out on the lake catching a few fish. What if you're new to the area, though? Our real estate agents can help you find the perfect home, but where will you find a good fishing spot nearby? We've got you covered. Here are a few of our favorite places to fish in the Bowling Green area.
- Nolin Lake State Park - 2998 Brier Creek Road, Mammoth Cave, KY 42259
Nolin Lake State Park is great for swimming, hiking, biking, and, of course, fishing. Located near Edmonson County homes for sale, the lake has a wide variety of fish, including bass, catfish, crappie, and walleye. Plus, there's a picnic area with grills to cook what you catch onsite. You can make a day trip of it or reserve one of their campgrounds, complete with electricity and other amenities, for a weekend or more. It's also a great spot for birdwatchers, with everything from great blue herons to bald eagles.
- Barren River Lake State Resort Park - 1850 State Park Road, Lucas, KY 42156
If roughing it isn't your thing, Barren River Lake State Resort Park is a great place for a weekend getaway. Located near Barren County homes for sale, there's a lodge next to the lake where you can rent a room or even a cottage and enjoy fishing, hiking, biking, boating, golf, shuffleboard, orienteering, and more. There are also playgrounds and picnic areas. But the best part of the area is the fishing. If you have a boat, it's a great place to take it out and fish for catfish, bass, bluegill, or crappie. They'll even rent you fishing equipment if you don't have your own. Plus, there are beautiful views all around, including scenic, paved walking trails.
- Limestone Lake - 831 Woodford Ave., Bowling Green, KY 42101
The best time for fishing at Limestone Lake is in the morning, between 5 a.m. and noon. That's when the fish are most active, including pumpkinseed, sunfish, catfish, and largemouth bass. Located near Bowling Green homes for sale, the area is privately owned, and it's open to the public for fishing at certain times of the year. Before heading out, check with local resources to be sure the area is available.
- West Fork of Drakes Creek
Drakes Creek is a small system of streams coming from the Barren River. West Fork of Drakes Creek is a smaller branch of the larger system that makes a great fishing spot. Located near Warren County homes for sale, there are a variety of great fish there that aren't as common in other local fishing areas, such as rock bass and muskellunge - as well as the more common offerings like bluegill and largemouth bass, plus smallmouth bass of 18 inches or more. There are several fishing floats along the way to mark the area and several perfect places to plant yourself for the day, such as Saddler Ford Road Bridge and Flat Bridge at Woody Atkinson Road. If you're looking for a small, out-of-the-way place with multiple fishing spots where you can relax, West Fork of Drakes Creek is the place for you.
Wherever you decide to fish, have your license first from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, and always abide by all local regulations.
